Mr. Aubrey Johnson “A.J.” Cox, age 88, of Hockessin, Delaware passed away peacefully in his home with his loving family by his side on January 4, 2016. Born in Biggers, AR., he was the son of the late Borden Cox and the late Thelma (Johnson) Cox Hayes.
Born and raised in northeast Arkansas, A.J. and his wife, Audrey Mae, moved to Delaware in 1959. Soon after, A.J. began his successful automotive business, Cox Auto Sales. Through the years, A.J. became an innovative and industrious entrepreneur and businessman who started and ran his wholesale and retail automotive business, as well as becoming a successful real estate developer with numerous ventures that included, among others, Broadmeadow nursing home and a Marriott hotel.
Lovingly known to his family as ‘Pop-Pop’, A.J. was a God-fearing man whose endeavors gained him earthly prosperity that he shared generously with his family and others, giving God the praise for all he had accomplished & gained. He was a longtime member of the Cedars Church of Christ in Wilmington, DE., and, when in this area, attended the Church of Christ in Currentview, MO., and those in Reyno and Success, AR. A.J. was also a lifelong member of the N.R.A. and was a 32nd degree Mason with Masonic Lodge #35 of Christiana, DE. In addition, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II.
A.J. was a man of many interests and talents. He loved being outside, beautifying and gardening in his yard throughout his life. In the early 1970’s, he won the inaugural race at the Pocono Raceway, and drove NASCAR Car #81 throughout that decade. He was also an accomplished harmonica and guitar player. In his spare time, A.J. enjoyed following NASCAR, especially Richard Petty, as well as watching Jeopardy, classic country artists, and baseball games—namely the Philadelphia Phillies and the St. Louis Cardinals; however, the most important part of A.J.’s life was his family, from spending holidays, birthdays and special events together, to making sure that he helped his friends, neighbors and family with any needs they might have.
A.J. is survived by his beloved wife of 67 1/2 years, Audrey Mae (Baughn) Cox; his sons, Doyle K. Cox (Jamie) of Landenberg, PA., and Glenn A. Cox (Virginia) of Cotter, AR.; his daughters, Carol A. Stephano of New Castle, DE., and Donna K. Brady (Kirk) of Doniphan, MO.; as well as 11 grandchildren, Harold (Chopper), Kendra, Felicity, Gwendolyn, Rachel, Vinnie, Brandon, Aaron, Austin, Michaela, and Julianne; 6 great grandchildren, Gerard, Hailey, Justin, Aiden, Giavanna, and Ofelia and 2 great-great grandchildren, Tristan and Anthony, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brothers, Tillman (Marie) and Harmon Cox and Dorman Hayes; and his sister, Molly Adams (Cas).
A. J. was predeceased by his parents, as well as his brother, Herbert Doyle Cox, and his sister, Doris Hubbard.
A visitation will be held at Ermert Funeral Home in Corning, AR., on Saturday, January 16, 2016, at 10 AM, with funeral services following at 11 AM. Interment will be at Pope’s Chapel Cemetery near Currentview, MO.
A pot-luck ‘Celebration of A.J.’s Life’ will follow at the Currentview Church of Christ.
