Mr. William Alfred (Bill) Nossett, 86, of Corning, AR., passed away Saturday, August 8, 2020 at Poplar Bluff Regional Hospital.

Mr. Nossett was born October 8, 1933 in Farmington, MO.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years Linda June Nossett of Corning, AR. He was the dear father of his children Terry Alan Nossett of Corning, AR., Stephanie Nossett Barker of Jonesboro, AR., and Annette Nossett Staggenborg of Fairfield, CA.; grandchildren Khristan Lamb, Joe Doyle; and an extended family.

He was the son of the late Marvin Edward Nossett and Sadie Glenda “Rhodes” Nossett Barneko of the St. Louis, MO., area.

He was a present member of the Corning Masonic Lodge #719 and also a 32 Degree Shriner of the Sahara Temple in Pine Bluff, AR. He was a past member of the Eastern Star serving as Worthy Patron for two terms and a past member of the Corning Lions Club when he first arrived in Corning.

He was a past member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church at Williford, AR having served two terms on the Ozark Acres Suburban Improvement District (SID) as Chairman in which he owned a separate lake property and home for many years.

He is a present member of Calvary Baptist Church of Corning, AR.

Mr. Nossett went into the U.S. Army in 1950 being sent to Camp Cook in Lompoc, California and then being sent to San Francisco.

He was then sent to Northern Japan where he took advance training in radio school communications. He was able to go to Tokyo and Hiroshima to witness the atomic bomb effects to Hiroshima and Nagasaki “Noga Sockies” at the end of the Second World War.

He then was shipped by boat to Busan, Korea to fight in the Korean War for 9 months. Then with his group was sent to Incheon, Korea in a three-quarter truck with no windshield or windows (to keep enemy from seeing any glass reflection in war zone) on December 3rd with the weather being minus 40 degrees with the group having to stop every so often to warm hands and feet by building a fire. Along with his fellow soldiers received frostbite fingers, toes and ears before finally being able to return to the states.

He arrived by boat at Seattle, WA., and then caught a train to a camp in Missouri to help guard AWOLs, Army prisoners, thieves, etc. that were stationed there.

He was later shipped to Fort Dawes, Massachusetts staying there for 6 months and then sent to Fort Tontin located in Frenchman Flats, Nevada (desert) to help in the atomic bomb testing of “Upshot” and then “Knothole” with the two atomic tests being one week apart.

While in the military, his occupation specialty was Intermediate Speed Radio Operator.

Medals received for his service were: Army of Occupation Medal (Japan) and Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star and the United Nations Service Medal.

After leaving the Army, he returned home living in the Farmington and Saint Louis, MO., area where he then spent 15 months in the National Guard as a sergeant.

After meeting his wife Linda (Little) and getting married, he then owned a Texaco Station in the Saint Ann, MO., area for a number of years and later moved to the Corning area with his wife Linda and son Terry Nossett.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday August 12, 2020 at 10:00 AM in the Ermert Funeral Home Chapel with Reverends Owen Little, Cam Stevens and Jackie Pickett officiating. Burial will follow the services at Post Oak Cemetery at McDougal, AR. Visitation will be held Tuesday August 11, 2020 from 6:00 PM until 8: PM.
