Calvin Hatley

November 5, 1924 — September 29, 2017

Mr. Calvin J. Hatley, 92, of Sunrise Beach, MO., formerly of San Jose, CA., passed away Friday, September 29, 2017 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He passed peacefully in his sleep at the home that he shared with his daughter and family near Lake of the Ozarks, MO.

Calvin and Christine (Mason) Hatley of Knobel, AR., were married from June 2, 1950 until her passing on January 21, 2006. They are survived by a son, Alan Hatley, a daughter Carolyn (Hatley) Burton and son-in-law Sam Burton plus grandsons Daniel Burton and Scott Burton.

He was born to parents Hector Hatley and Roxie (Farrow) Hatley on November 5, 1924 in Biggers, AR. Calvin was the first born of ten children.

In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by sisters Almadean (age 3), Colleen Carruthers, Ann Murray and Bonnie Ford.

Calvin is survived by brothers James Ray Hatley of Florida, Euell Hatley of Doniphan, MO., and Carl Hatley of Corning AR., his sisters Nita Cox and Berneta Baird, and by his dear lifelong friend from Lafe School Melva Gerdes Oneal of Fort Worth TX.; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and wonderful in-laws. This amazing family gathered at Calvin’s home in Missouri for a reunion just six weeks ago. He loved every minute of it.

Starting life as the son of cotton farmers in Biggers and Cache Lake, Calvin spent many hours chopping and picking cotton. After early graduation at age 16 from Lafe High School, he went to St. Louis to work at Barnes Hospital as an orderly. He was drafted at age 18 and became an Army medic with the 78th Lightning Division. Calvin did his WWII tour of duty in Germany, treating the wounded at Battle of the Bulge, the Battle at the Bridge of Remagen, Belgium and the final march into Berlin at the end of the war. His unit treated all soldiers including Germans, as well as wounded German citizens. We honor and are very proud of his service to our country.

After the war Calvin returned to obtain a degree at Arkansas State, was active in ROTC, married and moved to Memphis, TN., to pursue a long career with Ford Motor Co. From there he went to Michigan, to England for one year and finally to California for 51 years.

Early this year he moved to Missouri with his daughter and family to be closer to his birthplace and extended family. Dad lived a long, rich life. He will be missed.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 2:00 PM in the Ermert Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow the services at Pirtle Cemetery in Peach Orchard, AR., with Military Honors. Visitation will be held Saturday, October 7, 2017 from 1:00 PM until the time of services.
