Elsie Holifield

July 31, 1919 — June 22, 2013

Mrs. Elsie Laverne (Crafton) Holifield was born July 31, 1919 in Clay County, Arkansas and passed from this life on June 22, 2013 at the Corning Therapy and Living Center which is located just two miles west of her birthplace.

Elsie was one of seven daughters and seven sons of Poe Crafton and Louticia (Gage) Crafton. Her primary claim to fame was being a school teacher in the Corning and McDougal, Arkansas area where she was always known as “Miss Elsie.” She influenced the lives of many area residents. In fact, in some instances she taught three generations of the same family.

Elsie married John Holifield on May 15, 1943 and they raised their son, Lavern Lee Holifield on their farm east of Corning. She was an avid reader and enjoyed needle work in her retirement. She was a song leader and Sunday School teacher at Calvary Baptist Church in Corning.

Elsie is survived by her son Lavern and his wife Patsy of Corning, Grandsons John David Holifield of Hoover, AL., Cody Lee Holifield of Hoboken, NJ.: Granddaughter Cara LeAnn and husband Billy Shute of Pell City, AL.; along with five Great-Grandchildren John Gerrit Holifield, Brienna Nichole Holified, Madilyn Grace Shute, Olivia Nell Shute and Leigh Ann Shute all of Alabama. She also leaves two brothers Eddie Poe Crafton of Corning, AR., Bob Crafton of Rogers, AR.; two sisters Helen Johnson of Rockford, IL., Rosamond Aschenbrenner of Pinkney, MI.; and numerous nieces and nephews that she was extremely found of.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 2001; her parents; four sisters and five brothers.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at 12:00PM in the Ermert Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Loy Culver and Johnny Bradshaw officiating. Burial will follow the serves in New Hope Cemetery in Pollard, AR. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 25, 2013 from 10:00 AM until the time of service.
