Phil (Felice) DiMatteo, aged 89, passed away peacefully at his home in Santa Barbara, California, on the morning of October 9, 2025. Born on February 12, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the cherished son of immigrant parents Salvatore DiMatteo and Lucia DiCapua.
Phil's educational journey included a graduation from the Academy of Aeronautics in Queens, New York, which paved the way for his first job at McDonnell in St. Louis, Missouri. It was there that he met his beloved wife, Celeste Byers, originally from Knobel, Arkansas. Phil dedicated his career to fields including aircraft, missiles, and electronic warfare, serving as a technical writer, field engineer, publications department manager, and program manager. He later moved to Santa Barbara, where he enjoyed a fulfilling 30-year tenure with Raytheon before his retirement.
As a proud father of six, Phil’s greatest treasure was his children, and he nurtured the hope that they would always support and care for each other. A highlight of his life was when he and his daughter, Felicia, proudly graduated together from Santa Barbara City College in 1989. He continued his pursuit of knowledge, receiving his degree from California State University, Dominguez Hills shortly thereafter.
Phil's commitment extended beyond his family; he volunteered with Boy Scout Troop 105 for many years, actively participating in the annual summer trip and volunteering at the Christmas tree lot. In addition to his community service, Phil achieved remarkable personal milestones, including climbing Mount Whitney at the age of 65. His talent for home improvement made him a reliable friend who generously shared his skills in engine rebuilding and electrical work.
Phil is survived by his devoted wife, Celeste; daughters Lucia Eickert and Felicia Balezentes; sons Michael, Salvatore, James, and Paul; eleven grandchildren; and his sister, Frances Collins. He was preceded in death by his brothers Nicola, Frank, Nicholas, and Salvatore, as well as his sisters Filomena (Phyllis) and Liberata (Libby).
To honor Phil's wishes, he will be laid to rest at St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Knobel, Arkansas, with graveside services scheduled for November 10, 2025, at 10:00 AM. A Memorial Mass will be held in Santa Barbara at a later date, allowing family and friends to celebrate his life and legacy.
