Jerry Dale Cherry was born on November 3, 1935, in Reyno, AR, to Thomas Leonard and Alta Overby Cherry. He departed this life after a lengthy illness on April 8, 2019, at his home surrounded by his family. He was the youngest son in a family of five brothers and three sisters.
Joining the Navy at the age of 20, Jerry served on the USS General A. E. Anderson and on the USS General Edwin D. Patrick as a hospital corpsman. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to Corning where he started working for J. W. Black Lumber Co. beginning as a bookkeeper. He later became their hardwood lumber inspector, kiln operator and yard foreman. At his retirement in 1998, he had worked there for 38 and ½ years. In addition to his primary job, Jerry single handedly built both the Lumber Company and Retail Store 4 th of July floats for many years. He was trained in hardwood inspection and grading at the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) training school in Memphis, TN. While there he served as vice-president of his class.
Jerry was a member of Corning United Methodist Church. Throughout the years his civic memberships included the Corning Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, and the Masonic Lodge where he was past worthy master. His interests were many and were always shared with his family. He was an avid hunter and fisherman; delved in cattle farming, horses, and sorghum making; an accomplished wood worker; and often called the “dog whisperer” for his ability to train hunting dogs. His greatest joy seemed to be sharing these experiences especially with his grandchildren.
On August 9, 1980, he married Jean Frances Stewart who survives. Also surviving are three daughters: Sheila (Eddie) Adams of Senath, MO, Lynn (David) Bauschlicher of Corning, AR and Janna (John) York of Arab, AL; Eight grandchildren: Chris (Chelsea) Bauschlicher and Will (Olivia) Bauschlicher, Chas Adams and Clay (Val) Adams, Wesley (Jessica) Hohn, Lindsey Hohn, Aly York, and John York; Five great-grandchildren: Macy and Laura Bauschlicher, Kennedy Adams, Lincoln Hohn, and Boone Bauschlicher; one brother W. L. Cherry of Springdale, AR and two sisters Shirley (Jack) Crawford and Phyllis (Larry) Burrow of Reyno, AR.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his first wife, Dorles Cherry, one sister Margaret Ungerank, and three brothers T. L. Cherry, Jr., H. E. Cherry, and Niles Cherry

In remembering Jerry please keep these words that he once wrote to his daughter Janna in mind. “A man’s soul can be renewed daily by observing the beauty in his children, in flowers, and other things in nature and by doing things for others in need.” His life was full of love, doing for others, and appreciation for all of God’s gifts.
