Proverbs 31 provides an epilogue praising the “wife of noble character,” describing a woman who fears the Lord. She is a personification of wisdom and she is worth far more than rubies, he who finds her receives favor from the Lord. The family of JoAnn Kamerman truly found the most precious jewel on this earth.
“A wife of noble character who can find? Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life.” Proverbs 31:10-12. JoAnn Kamerman stood beside her husband, Lynden Kamerman for 67 years. High school sweethearts joined together in marriage on October 16, 1950, JoAnn provided a welcoming home environment to her husband, family and friends.
“She gets up while it is still dark: she provides food for her family…” Proverbs 31:15. Her love of gardening was often displayed with rows of neatly preserved food which she offered to her family and for anyone who happened by her home. She loved sharing her bounty of canned green beans or loaves of homemade bread. Cakes, pies and cookies were her favorite treats to provide for all. Care packages to grandchildren in the mail or snacks for the youth road trips, sweets made from love and shared from the heart.
“She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks.” Proverbs 31:17 There was little that JoAnn could not do. She worked diligently in whatever was set before her. Learning by her mother’s side JoAnn cooked, cleaned, ironed, and cared for little ones, and according to her husband JoAnn had the “grit” to take on the task.
“She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes.” Proverbs 31:25 JoAnn sewed everything from pillow cases to wedding gowns, clothing not only for her family but community members as well. Working from her home, many friends came to be “fitted” by JoAnn. This talent as a seamstress prompted her to open her own fabric shop in Fredricktown, MO., sewing garments of love for many years.
“Her children arise and call her blessed...” Proverbs 31:28 Her children were her joy. She spent countless hours crafting, putting together puzzles, mixing batter, popping popcorn, sewing and reading with the little ones in her care. She was lovingly referred to as “our second mother” by the neighborhood kids, “Granny” to her grandchildren, and “Aunt Jo” by those that held her close to their hearts. She saw the best in everyone and reminded them daily. She was full of love and life.
