Thomas Jefferson George

Mr. Thomas Jefferson George died peacefully at home in Corning, AR., on Saturday, March 30, 2013. He was born in Yell County on October 22, 1919 to Virgil and Myrtle (Holcomb) George. Thomas was an only child and was raised by his mother, Myrtle Windham and step father Ralph Windham. They moved from Yell County to Clay County in 1935. He played football at Corning High School from 1936 until he graduated in 1939. He met the love of his life Bernice Bartlett from Knob, AR., and they were married June 19, 1941.

Enlisting in the 30th Infantry Division of the US Army December 7, 1941, he was sent into Europe during the invasion of Germany and France. He went into Normandy at Omaha Beach on D-Day and was seriously injured in Saint Lou, France on July 6, 1944. He was in different hospitals in Europe before being transferred to Army Hospital in Jackson, MS., where he spent 12 months recovery. He was discharged from the Army on October 4, 1945 after earning the Purple Heart, the Victory Medal, and several other medals for his acts of bravery during his time in the war.

Thomas and Bernice opened Midwest Auto Parts on Front Street in Corning in 1946. He was active in the community and served on the city council for several years. He was also the mayor of Corning at one time. He was a real fisherman and loved to fish with his son, Tommy and his grandsons. He was a Christian and active member of First Baptist Church of Corning. He was a family man and will be missed by all.

He is survived by his wife Bernice of the home; one son Tommy George and wife Brenda of Corning, AR.; five grandsons Mark George and wife Leilani, David George and wife Chrissy, Scott George and wife Carmen, Dee George and wife Brandy, Kyle George and wife Brittany; sister-in-law Mrs. Anna Eaton of Batesville, AR.; 10 grandchildren Lindsey (George) Williams, Logan Hart, Rachel, Seth, Ally, Kylie, Riley, Sydney, Kassie, Addison, and Jaggar George; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at 1:00 PM in the Ermert Funeral Home Chapel Bro. David Richey and Dr. Rusty Keltner officiating. Burial will follow the services in Corning Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 3, 2013 from 11:00 AM until the time of service.
